Hands in the center

A principle which will occur in aikido practice has to do with keeping or getting your hands in front of your centerline. One way to practice this concept is boken training. What are the benefits of "hands in the center"?

First of all this principle will allow you to protect your centerline. The centerline contains structures and organs which need to be defended. Head, heart, lungs, groin area etc. Also if you want to use whole body movement during the usage of your hands it will be best to "work" in front of your own center. Different martial arts use this concept.

It's all about protecting yourself while at the same time being able to have strong offensive movements. Following I would like to show you this clip of a Russian martial art called Systema which deals with this concept. Defense and attack at the same time.

During your own Aikido training try to keep your "hands in the center".

Youtube video of the day is Sobue sensei. A student of Yamaguchi shihan.

Today's saying:

"UP, DOWN" . Fujita sensei.
